Read: Jeremiah 36:1-32
“The LORD gave this message to Jeremiah: ‘Get a scroll and write down all my messages against Israel, Judah, and the other nations.'” Jeremiah 36:1-2
Jeremiah had spent his life warning the people of God’s coming judgement and calling them to repent, but it had all been verbal warnings. Here the LORD instructs him to write it down. The king destroys the first scroll, but Jeremiah writes a second and those words endure to this day…
In verse 3 we see the heart of the Father… tell them again about the terrible things that are coming so that they might repent – “Then I will be able to forgive their sins and wrongdoings.” God longs to forgive and restore. That’s who He is. But His ability to do so rests on our coming to our senses and turning from sin and turning to Him.
If we’re smart that turnaround can come through a warning. If we’re stubborn then that turnaround comes through pain. It is always God’s desire that our repentance comes through the least pain possible, but because of His great love, He is willing to let us stubbornly walk through the pain to ultimately find our way home to Him.
God’s instruction to write down what He was saying to Jeremiah is powerful, profound, and a great practice for you and me. As you read God’s word, as you walk through life with Him, He will speak to you, show you things, and guide your heart. Having a journal to write down the lessons God is teaching you not only helps you to remember, but clarifies your thoughts, and gives you a coherent path to follow. It enables you to better share with others, and it really does cause you to grow spiritually.
If you don’t have a spiritual journal, this would be a great time to get one and start that practice. I use an electronic journal these days (a program/app called Evernote https://evernote.com/), but a paper journal works great too. Just get something that works for you and start the practice of Journaling. Even as you read and reflect on these devotions and scriptures, God will show you things, He will speak to you. Capture it!!! God always blesses us when we are faithful with what He entrusts to us.
LORD – speak to me through your word, and by your spirit. Help me to hear your voice. I ask that You would guide my life and help me with the spiritual practice of journaling. In Jesus’ name, amen.
