Read: Isaiah 40: 1 – 31
Focus: He (the Lord) gives power to the weak
and strength to the powerless.
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles. Isaiah 40: 29, 31
While I know every single verse in the Bible is useful in the life of a Christian (see 2Timothy 3:16), Isaiah 40 is a scripture that I find to be particularly useful; it’s one that I find myself turning to for a reminder of who God is and the comfort God provides during trying times. In Isaiah 40, God shares powerful truths about Himself with us as well as truths about the created (us) from the perspective of the Creator. The header in my Bible for Isaiah 40 is “Comfort for God’s People.” The imagery presented in verses 10 – 11 is extremely comforting to me:
Yes, the Sovereign Lord is coming in power.
He will rule with a powerful arm.
See, He brings His reward with Him as He comes.
He will feed His flock like a shepherd.
He will carry the lambs in His arms,
holding them close to His heart.
He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.
As I was praying about how to approach the writing of today’s devotional, I felt convicted that today’s reading is God’s direct words to us – they don’t need an explanation of context, background, or application from me. The message God provides us in Isaiah 40 is timeless and clear – anything I write would distract the reader from focusing on God’s words. So instead of reading my words, please focus your attention on what God is saying. I have embedded a video of a dramatic telling of Isaiah 40. Close your eyes, sit back, and let God’s words penetrate your brain. Meditate on His words and His truths.

Prayer: Your words are truth; Your way is right. I know You are speaking these words to me today as clearly as You spoke them to Your people through Isaiah thousands of years ago. Penetrate my heart and my mind with Your words. Help me to trust in You and Your timing; help me to wait on You. Remember Your promise, Lord, that for those who trust in You and wait on Your timing, You will strengthen us, You will enable us to soar high as if we were flying on the wings of eagles, You will empower us to run and not grow weary, walk and not faint. I surrender my burdens, my stresses, my concerns to You and ask You to continue to pour Your Holy Spirit into me – please fill me up, Lord; make me more like Jesus; rejuvenate and empower me to do Your work and bring You glory wherever You put me. In Jesus’ name… Amen
