Read: Exodus 39:32-40:38
“Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the tent of meeting and wash them with water. Then dress Aaron in the sacred garments, anoint him and consecrate him so he may serve me as priest. Bring his sons and dress them in tunics. Anoint them just as you anointed their father, so they may serve me as priests. Their anointing will be to a priesthood that will continue throughout their generations.” Exodus 40:12-15
So Moses gets these amazing, elaborate instructions from God on how to set up the portable worship center (aka Tabernacle – Mobile Church is not a new concept!). The directions were intricate, precise, and took a ton of time and money to do right. The craftsman went at it and built it masterfully.
Then came the time to consecrate (dedicate and purify) it all to the Lord through various ceremonies, anointings, and washings. Even the priests had to be consecrated and anointed in order to perform their priestly duties in the presence of the Lord.
After it was all done, the Glory (presence) of the Lord showed up and filled the place, and led the nation.
I don’t know about you, but all the religious pomp and ceremony is a disconnect for me. I’m not saying God isn’t worth it, but since Jesus, it isn’t necessary.
You see, through faith, we are washed and set apart. Washed in the cleansing, redeeming blood of Jesus. Washed in the renewing and life-giving water of the Spirit. And we are set apart for God’s purposes by the sealing of that same Spirit.
Being consecrated to the Lord doesn’t take a bunch of religious ceremonies anymore. It just takes faith in Jesus, and a commitment to obey Him as best you can.
Because of this we all, who are followers of Jesus, are part of the priesthood of God. 1Peter 2:9 says “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
Every Christian has the privilege to come into God’s presence and worship. We all have the opportunity to help people who are far from God connect with the amazing reality of a relationship with Him.
I am grateful that Jesus shifted things from religion to relationship, and in awe that He wants you and me to be His modern day priests. Think about it… there are 2.2 billion Christians in the world. 2.2 Billion priests who are set apart to worship God and lead others to Him. And when we do, the Glory of the Lord shows up to bless us and lead us. How cool is that?!!!
Jesus – help me today to embrace my role as a Priest in your Kingdom. Thank you for giving me direct access to a relationship with the Father. Thank you for your presence in my life and thank you that I get to play a part in helping others find the same hope and life you have given me.
