Read: 2 Kings 17:1-41
Even while these people were worshiping the Lord, they were serving their idols. 2 Kings 17:41
If you read the history of Israel this is the thing that ticked God off more than anything else and ultimately brought pain to His people time and again – worshiping idols.
Yes, their practices (child sacrifice and religious prostitution) were despicable in the sight of the Lord. Yes, they had abandoned God’s laws and covenant. But the thing that cut the heart of God even more than those things was the split devotion of their hearts.
Worshiping cast animals and sacrificing babies aren’t things we typically struggle with today, but our hearts are just as prone to split devotion as were the Israelites.
We end up worshiping things like comfort, success, money, relationships, our kids, our status, our own will, and I could go on and on. The result is always the same – pain and separation from God.
You see, God didn’t create you to worship anything less than Him. You might say, “Wait, now Chris, I go to church, I worship God. This really doesn’t apply to me.”
Please don’t jump to conclusions without some inner examination. Notice how our reading ends… “Even while these people were worshiping the Lord, they were serving their idols.” 2 Kings 17:41
So many Christians today serve other idols along with God, and He doesn’t play that game. Take a few minutes and look inside and ask God to show you the idols in your life. If there are any, stop serving them and start worshiping God with your undivided heart.
Dear God, I’m sorry for where I let other things take first place in my life or have tried to share first place in my life with You. I declare now that you alone are God and you alone deserve my worship. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
