Reading: Luke 24:1-12
Focus: Luke 24:6b
Remember what he told you…
I’ve had a really hard week. There was no giant tragic event or news, but there were a billion little (or medium-sized) things that stacked up on top of each other. I trust you know what I mean… and I’m sure I’m not alone. Maybe not this week, but I’d be surprised if you haven’t had a period of time where it felt like the world was against you. Yes?
In today’s reading, I tried to imagine what Jesus’ friends and family must have been thinking and feeling. They knew and trusted that Jesus was Lord. But then he died! What that what?!?! That IS a giant tragic event, and for them looking forward, it’s also a billion little (or medium-sized) things stacking up. They were known as being followers of Jesus. No one knew (yet) that Jesus had risen. Their world was upside down!
Then comes the reminder.
The angels in the tomb said, “Remember what he told you…” They were referring to Jesus telling his disciples and friends that all of this would happen – he would be betrayed, he would be killed, and he would rise from the dead. They were distraught and caught up in their own stuff. They forgot!
That makes me wonder… what have I forgotten?
John 10:10 – The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
Joshua 1:9 – Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Romans 8:28 – And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Ephesians 2:10 – For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Psalm 139:13-14 – For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
John 16:33 – “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Jesus told me what would happen, too… and I forgot! I’m so wrapped up in my own stuff that I lost sight of what God thinks of me, what he wants for me, what he did for me, and what I can expect of this world.
I’m flailing all over the place, but God is constant. He is a promise maker and a promise keeper. He is never against me, and he desperately wants me close to him. In my junk, I forgot what he told me.
Looking forward, I’ll keep the above passages in my face. Along with this one:
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8
I know that this doesn’t take away troubles, but it does take away panic, fear, anger, and anxiety. God’s got every one of the billion little (or medium sized) things under control, but I have to lean in to him and trust. And lean in further and trust some more.
You, too? God, help us.
Father God, you reign. You created me for a purpose that only I can fulfill, and you’re always right with me. Please help me to remember to seek you always. Put reminders in my path. Show me your way, and give me peace in the midst of hard days. I know you’ve got me… and ALL of billion things… in your hands. Thank you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
