Read: Exodus 18:1-27
“This is not good!” Moses’ father-in-law exclaimed. “You’re going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself.” Exodus 18:17-18
Have you ever said, “ I’m tired”? Of course you have! We all have! Today we look at a great passage of scripture from the Old Testament where we find in verses 17-26 that Moses is saying, “I am tired!”
The people were coming to Moses as their leader. He was obviously respected and the people knew he carried lots of influence. So what do people do when they squabble? What do people do today when working it out between two individuals or parties doesn’t work? They seek legal counsel. Moses was a lawyer or judge of that day and people were bringing their disputes that could not be settled among themselves to him.
Fairly quickly it became overwhelming for Moses. His father-in-law, Jethro, was visiting and could see that Moses was being over taxed by the people’s disputes. What does any good father-in-law do? He offers a suggestion to his son-in-law. Right? The answer was simple. DELEGATE! Find other leaders who can manage smaller numbers of people. Sounds like a good idea to me!
Moses instituted the first recorded delegation system. He found capable leaders who could take some of the burden off of him. It worked – and still works today!
Are you feeling tired? Are there other people in your life that could come along side of you and help? Hmmmmm……never thought of that, huh?
God, You know that I seem to be tired a lot. I feel like I am carrying the load. Would you help me to see someone who could come along side of me to help? Holy Spirit, would you help me when I am feeling overwhelmed by life’s issues. I ask this in the name of Jesus…Amen.
