Read:  Daniel 2:1-49

Focus:
“Praise the name of God forever and ever, for He has all wisdom and power.  He controls the course of world events; He removes kings and sets up other kings.”  Daniel 2:20-21

Daniel finds himself in an impossible situation in which the King of Babylon is demanding not only the interpretation of a dream, but a description of that dream by supernatural revelation.  The penalty for not getting it right was death for all the wise men in Babylon.  Can you say – crazy King??  Daniel and his friends pray to God and the LORD comes through and reveals to Daniel the dream and the meaning.  Daniel shares this with the king and everyone is saved.

We see in this passage that again, God had Daniel’s back as he placed his faith in the LORD and was willing to risk based on faith.  Daniel’s interpretation of the dream illustrated how temporary kings and kingdoms really are, and that God ultimately is in control and steering the events of earth toward a glorious destination.

We so often get focused on the immediate and forget that we are part of a much bigger story.  We are so “me” focused that we lose sight of the fact that we play a small part in God’s bigger plan.  This kind of “it’s all about me” narcissism characterizes our culture, and must be kept in check in the heart of the Christian.

It is true that God loves you as His own child and knows the number of hairs on your head, but it is also true that you are not the center of history or the universe.  It is true that we all have a part to play in the great drama, but it’s also true that our part is small in comparison to the whole picture.  It is true that we must play our part, but it’s just as true that God is the one who is directing.

Prayer:
LORD – help me to live in the tension of understanding the importance of my part in Your plan, and at the same time keep perspective of how small that part is and how short my time here is.  Father, let me rest in Your sovereignty and Your love for me this day.  You are the LORD – In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
