DailyDevotionRead: 1Tim 2:1-3:16

Focus:
In every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy. 1 Timothy 2:8

In our reading for today we find Paul instructing Timothy about how Christians should behave and how things at church should be run.

The verse that caught my heart was 2:8: “In every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy.”

Some would take this as a mandate for hand raising in church, which I don’t think it is. Raising hands in prayer was a cultural thing then, and it’s not so much now. Now, raising hands in worship is a cultural thing in some churches. I am a hands in the air worshipper when I feel led to, but I don’t believe that it’s a mandate from on high.

The important part of this verse is this… “free from anger and controversy.”

What Paul is saying is keep your heart drama free, anger free, and controversy free especially by the time you come to worship.

Now let me be clear…  drama comes our way whether we want it to or not. We have opportunities to get angry on a daily basis. Controversy can be a day in day out part of our lives if we allow it to. But Paul is saying don’t allow it to.

Choosing to handle our anger quickly, forgive quickly, not gossiping in the moment, but having the difficult conversations quickly and putting those controversies to bed quickly before they grow into division is a sign of spiritual maturity, and necessary for a healthy relationship with God and a healthy church.

People love drama. You get to choose if you are going to be high drama person or not. As followers of Jesus we must choose to not be drawn in and when it comes our way to confront it and move on.

To worship God well, make your heart a Drama Free Zone.

Prayer:
God forgive me for holding on to anger and being drawn to controversy. Help me to forgive quickly, to let things go, to not let drama and controversy consume my heart. Help me to be a drama extinguisher in my family, church and home. Help me to worship you with an uncluttered heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
