Read: Psalm 86:1-17
But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. Psalm 86:15
In this song (psalm) David is clearly in a time of struggle and turmoil. He is calling out to God to help him, and as he does, he is constantly reminding himself that God is faithful and good.
I don’t know about you but when things get tough for me, my basic human response is to complain, and question God. But here David shows us how to struggle well.
Remember who God is. Hold on to what is true about Him. And call on His name. Tough times come and go and are rarely as bad as they feel in the moment. But God is consistently compassionate, gracious, abounding in love. He’s faithful and slow to anger.
And if, like David, we can keep our heads on straight – if we can hold on to the truth of who God is – if we call out to Him, then we will come through just fine. If not, the waves of emotion can cause us to lose hope and go under.
Psalm 86:15 is a great verse to memorize for those difficult days. Perspective is powerful stuff.
Jesus – help me to remember who you are when life gets tough. Help me to have your perspective and to know your presence and faithfulness in my life. In your Name… Amen
