DailyDevotionRead: 1Pet 3:1-22

And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. But do this in a gentle and respectful way. 1 Peter 3:15-16

In this chapter, Peter instructs us on how to live Godly lives in the world. His theme is humility and service to one another and those outside the faith.

Peter’s assumption is that the result of following Christ, of living a life of humble service to others, is that we will face both persecution and hopeful inquiries about why we live the way we do.

Being the blessing to others raises eyebrows and questions. On the persecution side of the equation he assures us that God will reward us for what we go through. On the “What’s so different about you” or “I want what you have” side of the equation, he instructs us to be ready to explain what’s different about us, with gentleness and respect.

So are you ready? Have you practiced telling the story of how God changed your life? Do you know how to explain the Gospel and what the cross means. These are basic skills that all Christians should be ready to exercise… with gentleness and respect. The truth is, we will all face some rejection and persecution for following Jesus. There are forces in this world that oppose Him and us. But I love what Peter asserts in verse 13…  Now, who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good? The logical answer is no one.  And the truth is, if we live that way… we will get a lot more curious questions than angry rebuke.

Take some time and practice telling your story and if you don’t know how to tell God’s story, check out this website https://www.navigators.org/Tools/Evangelism%20Resources/Tools/The%20Bridge%20to%20Life.

Jesus – help me to live the way you taught, in the power of your Holy Spirit, so that others may see. Help me to trust you when the hard times come, and help me to be ready to share when people ask. In Jesus’ name, amen.
