Read: Ruth 3 – 4
When Ruth came to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, “How did it go, my daughter?” Then she told her everything Boaz had done for her and added, “He gave me these six measures of barley, saying, ‘Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’” Ruth 3:16-17
Throughout the Bible we are reminded in both powerful and subtle ways that our God is a God who provides. One of the names the Israelites had for God was Jehovah Jireh which means “God will provide”. This passage is a perfect example of how God, in His tender mercies, provides for His children.
Naomi has lost her husband and sons and is left to face an uncertain future as a widow with no one to care for her. But God knew her need and provided Ruth as a companion, helper, and friend. Not only that, but it’s through Ruth that God provides Naomi with protection. Naomi was too old to remarry, but because of her relationship with Ruth, when Ruth remarries, Naomi is brought under the protection of Boaz. I can only imagine her relief and gratitude. And then to get a grandson out of the deal!
Ruth also faces an uncertain future as a widow in a foreign land, but because of her faithfulness to Naomi and her decision to stay with her, God provides for her a husband and a new family.
Both Naomi and Ruth suffered great loss, and probably didn’t expect a whole lot of happiness to come their way. But God knew their suffering and had a plan to provide for them. Not just to provide for their physical security, but also to provide great blessing.
When we’re going through a difficult season, it can be so hard to see anything but misery. To believe that anything good will come can seem impossible. But remember that your God is Jehovah Jireh – your Provider. When Naomi lost her husband and sons, God wasn’t in just that moment, but in every moment that was to come and He knew He had a plan to provide. It’s the same for you and me. We can’t see the road ahead and may not know how we’ll be provided for, but we can be assured that God will provide.
As we remain faithful to walk in obedience, we are walking toward provision. We may not be able to see it, but if we keep our eyes on Jehovah Jireh and trust in His goodness, we’ll get there!
Heavenly Father, thank you, that you provide for all our needs. Your mercies and compassion never end and we are never out of your sight or your care. Help me to walk in faithfulness, Lord, trusting in your goodness. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
