Read: 1Kings 18:1-46
Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.” 1 Kings 18:22
Ahab, the King of Israel, and his evil wife Jezebel have been leading the nation in the worship of the false God Baal. Jezebel had fed and cared for the prophets of Baal and was fully invested in this violent and disgraceful false religion.
They had hunted down and killed as many prophets of the LORD as they could, and now Elijah (God’s big dog prophet) shows up for a show down. It’s him against the king and 450 Baal prophets.
So it’s a mountain top cage match and Elijah is unafraid. He knows that God is real and Baal is not, so he sets up this competition that would require an act of God. Talk about faith. He believed that God would come through and of course God did.
Sometimes in our lives when we are fighting something against all odds and feel outnumbered we waver in our faith that God can and will come through. I don’t know about you, but standing up to 450 guys who want me dead, and hanging my life on a miracle sounds like it might be more faith than I have most days. Yet this is exactly what Elijah does.
Faith is a big deal and faith is trusting God with our life, our reputation, our future and well… everything. As we watch the world around us come unglued and wonder what will happen (is all lost, where is God?), let me encourage you to choose faith. Look at the world through the eyes of belief that God is bigger and stronger and that He will come through. And you know what? He will. Believe it!
Father, I choose now to believe that you are greater than any opposition or obstacle that I face. I choose today to hang my life in the balance of your faithfulness, knowing that you are good, that you love me, and that you have my life and this world in your hand. In Jesus’ name. Amen
