Read: Romans 3:1-31
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God freely and graciously declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when He freed us from the penalty for our sins. Romans 3:23-24
In so much of the beginning of Romans Paul is trying to explain the mystery of the Gospel, but it really comes down to the fact that we’re all sinners by choice and by the sinful nature we inherit. But God is merciful in that He sent His only son to be a sacrifice for our sin. Paul says that, “He freed us from the penalty for our sins.”
In the book of Romans you can wrestle with the theological minutia of the faith and at the same time find yourself in awe of the theological brilliance of Paul and the revelation that God gave him. You can spend months or even years studying his words and drawing insight.
But it all comes back to this verse as far as I’m concerned. The simple beauty of God’s amazing love and sacrifice so that you and I and anyone who puts their faith in Jesus can be set free from sin and shame and guilt and the penalty for all of that. That we can be free to be in a relationship with God now and in eternity. That we can be free and that God made us and wants us to be free.
It’s the good news… God loves you that much!!!
Father, thank you for the simple, stunning beauty of the Gospel. Thank you for sending Jesus to die in my place. Thank you for setting me free. Help me to walk in this truth today and to help others discover it too. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
