“I will strengthen Judah and save Israel; I will restore them because of my compassion. It will be as though I had never rejected them, for I am the LORD their God, who will hear their cries.” Zechariah 10:6
The prophet Zechariah, speaking for God, predicts the restoration of Judah and Israel by the LORD. They have been through hundreds of years of bad leadership, 70 years of exile, and the people of God are overwhelmed at the proposition of resettling the land and rebuilding.
Zechariah proclaims that God will do this work – God will restore, God will send a new king, God will establish His people once more. This had to be an encouraging word to a people who for a generation struggled under the yoke of pagan oppressors, and who heard the stories of how things used to be, but could only see the destruction of what was.
I believe God’s words for the people of old are His words for us today. He looks at the overwhelming situations we face, the oppression we live under, the broken walls of our lives and relationships, and He declares… “I will restore them because of my compassion…I am the LORD their God, who will hear their cries.”
The other day I was helping a dear friend of mine who struggles with alcoholism. He’s lost everything that he cared about and is at the end of himself. As we prayed and he cried out to God, it was one of those moments where I felt the spirit of God say… I hear the cry of the broken, and will restore the lives of the oppressed.
That’s my prayer, and I believe it’s God’s heart for all of us. “I will restore them because of my compassion.” The LORD is gracious and compassionate. Today is the day to cry out for His restoration. He is waiting to establish or reestablish your life for His glory.
Lord, the thought of rebuilding the broken places in my life is overwhelming. Will You pour out Your compassion on my life? Will You pick me up from the mess I made or the mess I was handed, and make a testimony of my life for Your glory. I declare today that You are the Lord and I choose now to surrender my will to You. Your will, Your way. My life I surrender to You today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
