Read:  Mark 15:1-47

Focus: Mark 15: 34: Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

The focus verse for today comes from Messianic (meaning about or of Christ) prophecy of King David found in Psalm 22. While reading and praying about what to write for today’s devotional, I felt a leading that my words can’t add anything to God’s word, so I’m going to do things a little differently today. If you normally just skim the readings and then closely read the devotionals, please take the time to prayerfully read the full reading for today. Below you will find a 3 minute video from the Bible series and Son of God movie that shows scenes of Jesus’ life and crucifixion with the song Oh, Son of God playing in the background. After watching that, I would also encourage you to take a couple of minutes and read what David wrote prophetically about Jesus in Psalm 22. You can read it here: Psalm 22 at Bible Gateway.com

Oh, Son of God: (If for some reason your browser blocks embedded videos, the direct link to watch it on YouTube is here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Oci8TNWygc&feature=youtu.be

Before praying, please take a minute or two in quiet to search yourself. Jesus endured this suffering for you and for me, but He didn’t do it as a general goodwill gesture; He allowed Himself to be mocked, tortured, and painfully crucified for a very specific purpose. He took this abuse so we could be forgiven and be in a relationship with our Creator. What does that mean to you? Think of that and let it guide you as you speak to our Savior and Lord through prayer.

Prayer:
Lord, I’m blown away by Your sacrifice on the cross. When I read about it, sometimes it seems almost sterile and hard for me to visualize what You suffered for me. But I can now picture it in my mind. The humiliation and mocking you endured, the painful torture, the separation from our Father. You suffered the unimaginable for me. I know this, and yet I keep sinning – I’m shamed by my weakness, and all I can do is turn to You. Thank You for Your patience with me. Thank You that because You suffered for my sins, I never have to endure being abandoned by the Father. Thank You for taking my punishment. Please forgive me, Lord, for my sins. I offer myself to You, all of me. I love You, Lord, and want to be closer to You more than anything. You have made me; I will follow You. In Jesus’ name I pray… Amen
