Read: Matt 1:1-25
All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.'” Matthew 1:22-23
The genealogy of Jesus, the details of His birth, the purpose of His life (to save His people from their sins), and that He would literally be God with us, was all predicted hundreds of years before His birth. His arrival was the hinge point of history, and was nothing short of miraculous if not simply for the fulfillment of hundreds of prophecies, several of which we see in this passage.
“God is with us” may be the most powerful words uttered from the angel’s mouth. Everything else was miraculous and amazing and I am sure stunning for Joseph, but God with us had to trump it all. The people of Israel had been waiting patiently for 400 years for God to say something, and instead of sending a prophet, He came himself.
Four hundred years of silence, of darkness, of wandering and waiting. For Joseph and Mary this had to be news too good to be true, and yet they were convinced and ready to walk through the controversy. God was coming! He had not abandoned His people! They got to be part of the rescue.
This story unfolds, in one way shape or form, in the lives of all those who become followers of Jesus. God captures our hearts, His spirit fills us (God with us), and we are invited into the rescue mission of helping others find and follow Him. Like Joseph, being part of the rescue is messy, there is misunderstanding, controversy, and difficulties to walk through. Also like Joseph, there are miracles, leadings, and reasons to believe that God really is with you.
Joseph was invited to enter Jesus redemptive story and so are you. The good news of “God with us” is as powerful today as it was 2000 years ago, and you have been given a part in spreading the news. How is it going?
Lord – Thank you for inviting me into your rescue mission. Thank you for coming and living in my heart by your spirit. Thank you for all the ways that you have spoken – through your word, through fulfilled prophecy, through your spirit and through others, confirming who you are and what you’re up to. Like Joseph, I am in and up for the adventure. Use me to help others find and follow you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
