Read: Jeremiah 27:1-22
This is what the LORD says: ‘I have not sent these prophets! They are telling you lies in my name, so I will drive you from this land.’ Jeremiah 27:15
God instructs Jeremiah to act out another prophecy against Jehoiachin of Jerusalem and against the surrounding countries. God tells him to wear a wooden yoke – like an ox – around, and declare that this is what Babylon is about to do to them. He instructs them to not resist, but to submit, for the punishment is already set. The king, of course, finds other prophets who will tell him what he wants to hear and that creates a problem. Who to listen to?
God still speaks to us today – not usually through dramatic prophets but often through other people. Sometimes He speaks to us directly by His Spirit into our hearts. We still have to sort through the competing voices and determine what is from Him and what is just distraction.
1 John 4:1 tells us – do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. In other words, seek confirmation about what you think God is saying to you. Sometimes you will know right away that it is the Spirit of God directing your life. Other times you will have to wrestle with the question in prayer and run it by other trusted, mature Christian friends.
In either case, God will make it clear to you if you seek Him above what you want. In this case the King didn’t want the Babylonians to invade and take control, so he chose to believe the false prophets. We do the same thing. We find people who will tell us what we want to hear, or we will hear what we want in prayer or scripture, rather than surrendering to the will of God up front and letting Him set the desires of our hearts. It always works out better when we go with His plan, and He isn’t shy about making it clear if we will listen and surrender.
Father God – forgive me for always pushing for my way and allowing that to hinder my ability to hear Your voice in my life. Your plans are best and Your plans are what I want. I choose now to surrender to You. Please give me the ability to know when it is You speaking and guiding and when it is a distracting voice. I choose you!!! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
