Read:  2 Kings 24:8-17

He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father had done.  2 Kings 24:9

Do you see a pattern here? Doesn’t it seem like king after king after king follows in his fathers footsteps, doing “evil in the eyes of the Lord”? There was just a handful that broke that pattern and repented and sought after the Lord.

We all inherit things from our parents. I inherited my mom’s smile and my dad’s corny sense of humor. I’m sure you can think of things passed down to you from your parents – hopefully good things. But because we’re all human – all have fallen short – even those of us with the best parents inherit the not so good along with the good.

Sometimes that family pattern can be really destructive and while you recognize it, you can’t seem to shake it. I wonder if some of the kings of Israel and Judah felt that way. They had a front row seat to the downfall of their fathers. They watched as their fathers chose to walk away from the Lord and go their own way. And they saw the pain, death, and destruction that came about as a direct result of that sin.

Whatever the pattern has been in your family – anger, addiction, perfectionism, lying, jealousy, worry, fear – you don’t have to repeat the pattern of sin that has been handed down to you and you don’t have to pass it down to the next generation.

The great news is that we have a God who specializes in new beginnings. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

While it may not happen overnight, when we submit to God, when we lay that pattern down at the foot of the cross – we no longer carry the weight of it and it no longer has power over us.

Is there a family pattern in your life that needs to be broken? Ask the One who came to break chains and set the captives free – He is willing and He is able.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36

Lord Jesus, thank you that you are alive in me and able to break every chain that binds me. You alone are God. There is none like You! Please help me to recognize and confess family patterns of sin in my life and put a stop to the pattern in my generation. You are awesome, Lord! In the powerful name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
