Read: Proverbs 1:1 – 2:22
Focus: Proverbs 2:1-11
1 My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
3 indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He holds success in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
8 for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.
9 Then you will understand what is right and just
and fair—every good path.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
11 Discretion will protect you,
and understanding will guard you.
We live in a time when information is at our fingertips like never before. We have access to a whole lot of “knowledge,” but that does not mean we have wisdom. Fortunately, Solomon asked for wisdom, God gave it, and he wrote a lot of his wisdom down. Through the book of proverbs we have a great deal of not only knowledge, but wisdom at our fingertips.
Early on in my faith walk, it was recommended to me to read a chapter of Proverbs every day. There are thirty-one chapters in Proverbs so it works out pretty nicely. If I have missed a day of reading, I just remember the date and pick up there. Through the years, I have read through this book several times.
There is so much practical wisdom in this book for us. So much that applies to our daily lives. These first nine chapters were written for young people, but can really apply to all of our lives. Life is better when we follow the advice of the Creator, after all He knows what works best, He designed it all.
The book of proverbs is a gift to us. If we read it and learn from these simple sayings we will understand God better, understand life better, and have more access to the life God intended for us.
Turn your ear to His wisdom and your heart to understanding it. It is worth your time!
Thank you God that you, like a good parent, give good advice. You know what is best for me and you are faithful to teach me and guide me in the way I should go. Give me ears to hear, eyes to see, and a heart to understand. Let the way I live my life prove that I follow you! In Jesus name, Amen.
