Read:  Numbers 22:1-41

The angel of the Lord asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me. The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now, but I would have spared it.”  Numbers 22:32-33

This is one of my favorite stories of the Bible. It is one scripture that I’ve heard many sermons on over my lifetime, but it’s one that really fascinates me. It’s normally used to move people toward volunteering to be a Sunday School teacher or some other area in the church). The tag line was always, “if God can use a donkey he can use you.”

Does that motivate you to serve? No? I didn’t think so….  I will not be using this devotional to ask you to serve, although that is what I want for all of you.

Get this! In our focus verses, the donkey saw the angel three times. Balaam did not. Three times Balaam was headed in a wrong direction, and three times the donkey saved Balaam from heading to destruction. What thanks does he get for being transportation and companionship to his master? He gets beaten with Balaam’s staff. Poor donkey!!

Since coming on staff at the Vineyard, I very often get the chance to speak into lives of folks who attend our church. Many times I attempt to speak words of warning or words of caution to people who I believe are headed down a wrong path. Now, I’m not calling myself a donkey, and the good news is that no one has beaten me with a staff or club. Yet. When I’m able to speak in to a person’s life, they have the choice to hear what I say or, like Balaam, they choose to resist. I believe that God puts people and circumstances in our lives when we very well may be heading down a path of destruction.

Are you resisting God in any area of your life? Is He trying to save you from going down a path that you should not be going down? Is He trying to stop you from going down a trail that will inevitability lead you to destruction? If so, why are you resisting? Trust me – God knows what is best and knows the very best path you need to be on. Maybe it’s time to listen….

God, forgive me when I want to do my own thing. I know you put people and
circumstances in my path to keep me from destruction. I am asking you for your forgiveness. Would you speak clearly to me this day and show me the path that you have for me? And would you please help me to take that path today? In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

  1. Thank you for todays message. I do believe we do. Resist Gods message. These daily readings help to keep me on the right path. I love my church. I work ever other saturday & Sunday til 7p. I wish church was at 7p on Saturday. But I am so thankful for this daily message. Thank you

  2. Dear donkey:
When is it permissible to tell work “nope, sorry, I have a church function/committment?” I want to be involved but in my professions I can’t take a LEAD role, for church, because of the uncertainty of my work schedule. I love my church yet I have to recognize that God expects me to pay my debts or bills, so employment is required. I really would think it would be awesome to fill my day with adventure kids, and grow groups so you see my conundrum……I Want to be at church but I also need to be employed. Donkey angel Barry, ….can you coach me a little….please?
