Read: Luke 24:13-53
Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. Luke 24:45
After the resurrection, the disciples were disillusioned and afraid. They just couldn’t get their heads around a suffering Messiah. In their thinking the Messiah would be a mighty conqueror in the military sense. To die on a cross was shameful and the Messiah was to be anything but shameful and weak.
So Jesus shows up (in disguise) and walks with two of His followers and goes through all the prophecy in the Old Testament that foretold what would happen to the Messiah. He was helping them understand that it was all part of the plan.
The passage says, “Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” Jesus gave them the ability to get their heads and hearts around what they were previously unable to see in God’s word.
This is a great thing to pray for: God, open my mind to understand the Scriptures. Have you ever been reading the Bible and it just feels flat? Yeah, me too. But there are times when the Holy Spirit just brings it to life. Where He shows you something you’ve never seen before, or an application to your life that you had missed up until then.
The difference between “getting it” and not getting it, is Him opening our minds to understand. In this passage it’s Jesus opening their minds to understand. In our time it’s the work of the Holy Spirit, who lives inside of us.
If Bible reading is work for you let me encourage you to seek God to open your heart and mind to the Scriptures. It’s so fun to read the Scriptures and feel like God is speaking directly to you. And you know what? He is.
Holy Spirit – open my mind and my heart to understand the Scriptures. Speak to me through your word and bring your word to life inside of me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
