Read:  Matt 14:1-36

He (Jesus) went up into the hills by himself to pray.  Matthew 14:23

Jesus spends the day healing all the sick people (which is like a side note to feeding the 5000), but it’s a day of teaching, healing and miracles. Then Jesus needs some down time. Time alone to pray and be with God. He sends the disciples away and climbs up into the hills to reconnect with His heavenly father.

Jesus shows us here the necessity for intentional connection with God and how to go about that connection. God has more amazing stuff for Him to do that evening, but first Jesus needs to plug in with the Father.

So if Jesus needs to set aside intentional time to be with God – to plug into His power source, to fellowship with the Father – how much more do we.

When I was a teenager someone introduced me to the concept of a Quiet Time:  scheduling 5, 10, or 15 minutes each day to plug in and be with God. The time could include Bible reading, prayer, singing worship songs, or just quiet listening. The point was to intentionally spend time with my Heavenly Father. In doing so consistently we build depth in our relationship with Him, are empowered by Him and we give Him space to speak into our lives and direct us.

Jesus modeled this and I can tell you from personal experience, it’s a recipe for spiritual growth and empowerment. Just a couple of tips on the QT that I have learned over the years:

  1. Schedule it.  Life is busy and if it’s not on the calendar, it probably won’t happen, unless of course you’re sitting around all day bored out of your mind, but I don’t know anybody in that boat. I even have to schedule dates with my wife for them to happen.
  2. Don’t let it become a performance thing.  God loves you the same whether you miss a day or not. This isn’t to earn His favor but to deepen your friendship with Him.
  3. Enjoy your Quiet Time.  There is nothing more refreshing than spending time with people who love you and who you love. God loves you a lot. Let Him pour into you. Invite the Holy Spirit to fill you, speak to you, and refresh you.

Life is so much better when you are powered by God, and connected with Him. Jesus knew it and lived it. Happy friendship with God!!!

Father – thanks for loving me and for sending your Spirit so I can have a relationship with you. Help me be consistent in my Quite Times, and meet me in them I pray – in Jesus’ name, amen.
