Focus: Galatians 1:10
“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
The Epistle to the Galatians, often shortened to Galatians, is the ninth book of the New Testament. It is a letter from Paul the Apostle to a number of early Christian communities in Galatia.
I absolutely love what Paul writes in verse 10 of chapter 1:
Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
I think Paul is hinting to his past, as he was a people pleaser. The hints are, “Am I now trying,” and “If I were still trying.” It seems to me that Paul had been seeking approval from those around him and he wanted to please them.
We are all seeking approval. It begins with toddlers and the disciplining they receive. The child wants positive attention and love, and will learn how to please the parents. As adults, we tend to make decisions based on how other will react, or how we anticipate them reacting. Isn’t that crazy? We build an impressive resume for others to be impressed. We strive for others to be pleased with our achievements, and for others to give us approval. It’s how the world is!
But whose approval do we need? People’s or God’s?
I hope the answer is obvious……God’s!
Paul writes in the second half of Galatians 1:10,
If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
When I read the above scripture, I instantly think of Matthew 6:24,
No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
I feel this scripture applies to every aspect of our lives. Money is not the only worldly thing competing for our hearts. We need to put down all things of this earth and serve only the one true God. Are you serving yourself? Are you serving others? Are you serving money, fame, fortune? Or are you serving God? Are you denying yourself, and all the things of this world, to serve the one true God? I pray that you are.
Dear Jesus, I pray that you would strengthen my heart with your love. Give me the eyes to look upon you and seek only your approval. I ask for wisdom in navigating my life in-accordance with your plans. I seek your approval in all that I do. In your name I pray, Amen.
