Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. 2 Timothy 2:2
Paul, writing from prison, encourages Timothy, his young protege, to stay true to the simple message of the gospel, to be evangelistic, and to stay the course in the face of trouble and suffering. He also gave Timothy a simple and timeless strategy for developing people…
Basically what Paul tells Timothy is find some folks you can teach what I have taught you with the idea that they can teach others what you taught them. In other words, teaching isn’t a dead end just for our entertainment and learning. No, it’s a means of spreading the word of God and every one of us has a role to play.
We must learn then turn around and teach some others. Then they must learn and then turn around and teach some others. When we sit and absorb and don’t intentionally pass on what we’re learning to others we stagnate, the message stagnates, and the impact of our lives and the gospel is lessened.
I’ve heard it compared to the difference between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. Both are fed by the Jordan River, but the Sea of Galilee is teaming with life and the Dead Sea is… well… dead. The difference is that the Sea of Galilee has an outlet, and so when water comes in it passes water on at the other end. The Dead Sea, on the other hand, is a dead end. Water goes in, but then it just sits there and grows toxic. The same thing is true for us. If we just sit and receive and never turn and share what we’re learning with others, we will grow toxic. I’ve seen it happen so many times.
This is the same pattern Jesus used with the disciples. He taught them, they taught others, the others taught others, and on and on it went.
So who are you teaching what you have learned. Kids in Sunday School, students in youth group, some peers in a grow group, or teammates on a ministry team? Do a quick personal evaluation and if you are not passing along the truths you have been given, make a plan to start.
Father – give me vision for who and where I can share what you have shared with me. Give me courage to step up and pass it on. In Jesus’ name, amen.
