Read: Ezekiel 37:1-14
O my people, I will open your graves of exile and cause you to rise again… I will put my Spirit in you, and you will live again and return home to your own land. Ezekiel 37:12 & 14
The Jews have been obliterated and exiled. They have lost their land (the promise of God to Abraham), they have lost their nation (the promise of God to David), they have lost everything. It would seem that the promise and blessing of God, and their very nation, is dead.
But God had other plans. This famous “dry bones” passage is God declaring to a people who had given up hope that He would restore them.
God never gives up on us, even when we give up on Him. He never wants our destruction, but our affection. He may turn away for a season so that we see the death in our sin and turn back to Him, but He longs to restore us to a relationship with Him.
So much so that He sent His own son to pay the price for our redemption.
I love the heart of God for people. No matter how far we have fallen, or how big we have blown it, no matter how dead our heart is, He still loves us and is just waiting for us to come home. When we do – when we turn to Him – He gives us a brand new life and like these dead bones, He brings our hearts back to life and fills us with His Spirit.
As Christians this is our story and this is our mission. To proclaim new life and God’s redemption to a world that is in so many ways dead and hopeless. The gospel is good news and we get to share it. Wake up dry bones and come to life!
Father – will you breathe new life in the dry bones that populate our valley. Will you pour out your Spirit and bring revival to those who are dead on the inside. Help me to be on mission with You and help me to help others find and follow You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
