Read: Rev 22:7-21
“Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds.” Revelation 22:12
Verse 12 is interesting because it talks of rewards for how we have lived our lives. That Jesus will come soon and repay us according to our deeds.
For so many people, the proclamation of salvation by grace alone, not by works so that no one can boast, has been twisted into a theology of “how I live doesn’t matter – God forgives me anyway.” But Jesus is clear here and in other places that how we live matters greatly.
The principle of eternal rewards is clear throughout scripture, and living our lives for ourselves is not the Christian lifestyle that Jesus proclaimed. In fact, He calls us to die to ourselves and follow Him, and all the while promising us rewards in Heaven. I wrote in my journal last week: “The #1 problem plaguing Christians today is that we live for this world and not for the next.”
This passage is full of hope for the follower of Christ, and while salvation is a gift given by faith, the rewards of Heaven are bestowed upon the faithful. Take a few minutes and do a self-assessment. Are you living for this world or the next? Then, take some time and surrender your life again to Jesus. Ask Him to give you eyes to see the opportunities for kindness and blessing others that He has prepared in advance for you. Ask for the courage to seize these opportunities, and commit your life to Him and His service.
Come Lord Jesus – but until you do, give me the strength and power to serve you and people well. Help me to see the opportunities and to take them boldly. Help me to live for you, before myself. And help me to always remember that this life is short and eternity is forever. In Jesus Name… amen.
