Something of the essence of our faith is forfeited when we lose our sense of urgency!
Imagine a football team that had no concern for time. The quarterback tells jokes at every huddle. The wide receiver wants consensus before he dares cross the middle in front of the linebackers. The quarterback only throws high looping passes because throwing hard could hurt his arm. Nobody looks at the clock or stresses over delay-of-game penalties. The coach sits on a stool sipping hot chocolate and discussing the merits of the last play with his assistants before he sends in the next play.
With this team, you can’t really tell the difference between a drive and a timeout. The other team is up by ninety-two points, but nobody on our team keeps score. They will all stand up and tell you they are real players. They will all be deeply offended if you point out how poorly they play the game. Truth be known, they enjoy the huddle more than the game itself.
My ridiculous imagining displays a lethargic church. Our message and mission were born of blood. Our calling is forged in the fires of urgency. We are now living deep into the two-minute warning. We have received the ultimate hand off. Now we must run!
