Read: Romans 8:1-39

I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.  Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow – not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below – indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus, our Lord.  Romans 8:38-39

In the face of persecution Paul declares this eternal truth that God loves us so much that absolutely nothing can separate us from Him – certainly not our current trials, regardless of their source.

Many people will question God’s love, His presence with them, His faithfulness, and His existence when things get tough, but the truth is God is there. His love is true, His faithfulness steadfast, and the reality of His existence as sure as the sunrise. When we face hardships, persecution or even bad hair days, God is there working His will, shaping our character and often accomplishing a bigger purpose that goes well beyond us.

Christianity isn’t about getting an easy life and a free ticket to heaven. It’s about being part of God’s family and team. It’s about dying to ourselves and living for something bigger. It’s about God’s will and plan… not ours. Sometimes that leads us to places we don’t like. It did Paul as he was arrested multiple times, beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, slandered, and opposed.

It was after all that, and in the midst of it, that he penned these words…  “Nothing can separate us from God’s love.” And that is a truth worth tucking away in our minds and hearts. Because trials will come, but the knowledge of God’s presence and love changes what the trials mean, and they carry us through them.

Father, help me to live in the moment to moment reality of your love for me. Help me not to doubt it, and help me to know your love in the deepest places of my soul.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
