Read: Luke 14:1-35
For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 14:11
You cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own. Luke 14:33
Jesus’ teachings turned the common wisdom of the day on its’ ear. He could be heard saying: if you want to be great make yourself a servant, if you want to be first – go to the end of the line, and if you want to be exalted, humble yourself.
Seems counterintuitive, but you know, it actually works. Humble servant leadership is the pathway to greatness in the Kingdom of God. And when we live authentically that way, it shines bright in the world too.
The ultimate act of humility is surrendering our lives, our will, and our dreams to God. This doesn’t mean we don’t live or have dreams. What it means is our lives and dreams are always second to God’s plan and dreams for our lives. It is dying to ourselves, picking up our crosses daily (an expression that means to die). It means not only choosing but desiring God’s way over our own.
Talk about humbling!!! But it’s the path to freedom, adventure, impact and meaning. It’s life in all its fullness and it’s the life you want to live. So… control freak, how’s your humility and surrender? 🙂
Jesus – I surrender it all to You again today. I want what You want for me more than what I want for me. Help me to live the rest of the day that way. Help me to live the rest of my life as a humble servant leader surrendered to You. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
