Read: Hebrews 11: 1 – 40

Focus: Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.

And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek him. Hebrews 11: 1, 6

What is faith? Is it something we can give ourselves or make stronger if we only believe hard enough? When Jesus addressed people (Peter, all of His Apostles on multiple occasions) as being of “little faith”, was He chastising them? What does that mean to us? Why do I sometimes feel like I have so little faith? All of these questions come to my mind whenever I read Hebrews 11.  So what is faith? Hebrews 11:1 provides us with an answer: “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.” A complimentary way of looking at faith is also that faith is the instrument God uses to bring salvation to His people. We are told in the Bible that because God is graceful, merciful, and loves us, He wants to save us and gives us faith (see Ephesians 4 – 5). In Ephesians 2:8, Paul tells us that our salvation is through faith, which is a gift from God: “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift.” If our faith and subsequently our salvation are gifts from God, that means it is something that is freely given by God, not something we can earn. As our reading today tells us, faith and our salvation are intrinsically tied together.

What this reminds me is that honestly, my questions aren’t all that important. Faith isn’t about me, my feelings, or my thoughts. Faith is about what God chooses to give… voluntarily because of of who He is, not because of what I’ve done. Salvation is a gift that God is giving to me because of what He’s done, not because of who I was, am, or could ever be.

I accept God’s free gift and choose to believe in Him. I believe in Jesus, and because of that I have faith.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that You sacrificed Yourself for me. Thank You for the gift of faith in You and salvation. I pray that You continue to grow me, make me more like You, and strengthen my faith no matter what I face in this life. I love You. In Jesus’ name… Amen.
